See, this is why it's important to be specific in these types of situations. Garfield should have clarified for the scale to apologize for calling him fat, but he didn't. That's what TVTropes refers to as Ambiguous Syntax.

President Garfield was shot on this day in history. I read the strip last night in a real newspaper that had Garfield The Cat's age. Of course, no cat has ever lived that long and I think the strip needs to stop telling us his age. Looking at the comments to see if that was mentioned, I found a reference to President Garfield. The commenter was wrong, because Taft was the fat president. Jim Davis was named for his grandfather who was in turn named for the president.
